MUSD Superintendent's Newsletter
November 2024
Dear Parents and Guardians,

Thanksgiving Table
November brings with it the cooler weather and the rains, and time for reflection and gratitude. As I reflect on my time here in the MUSD, I am so grateful for the opportunity to serve the students and families of the district, and am truly grateful for your continued support and involvement in our school communities.

It's hard to believe that the first semester of the school year is almost over. The planning for the 25-26 school year is beginning with TK registration starting in the next few weeks and course selection for the 8th to 9th grade students not far behind. Please encourage your student(s) to end the semester on a positive note, attending school each day and completing all assignments.

Just a reminder that schools will be closed on Veterans Day, observed on Monday, November 11. This day is dedicated to honoring the brave men and women who have served in the armed forces. I encourage you to take this opportunity to discuss the significance of Veterans Day with your children and to reflect on the sacrifices made by our veterans.

Schools will be closed for Thanksgiving break from Monday, November 25th and will reopen on Monday December 2nd. Enjoy the start of the holiday season!

Educational Services Updates
California Department of Education Updates Graduation Requirements beginning in 2025-2026
Two new high school graduation course requirements are in place for the 2025-2026 school year at AHS, VMHS and Briones. Each site will offer its 12th grade students a semester in Ethnic Studies followed by a semester in Financial Literacy.
People of diverse ethnicities
These courses are currently going through the process of being vetted by staff and will be brought to the MUSD Curriculum Advisory Committee for approval before they are adopted by the MUSD School Board in June. The courses must be approved by the final CAC meeting in May. Click on the course titles in the paragraph above to link to the CDE and read about the two new graduation courses that will be listed under Elective Credits for all students.
A financial literacy book.
Although Financial Literacy is not mandatory until the 26-27 school year, the MUSD will be putting it in place a year early, as a semester course backing up to Ethnic Studies course. All 12th grade students will automatically be enrolled in these mandatory classes next year. Credit for these classes will be in the elective category and will not change the overall credits needed for graduation. Please reach out to your the administrator or your student's academic counselor with any questions.

AHS Equity Review Progress
A Team of 15 AHS stakeholders have met for the second time to review the AHS Systemic Equity Review Report completed last June by the Education Trust West.

EdTrust–West is a nonprofit organization that is committed to advancing policies and practices to dismantle the racial and economic barriers embedded in the California education system, transitional kindergarten through college. Through our research and advocacy, EdTrust–West improves racial equity in education, engages diverse communities dedicated to education equity and justice, and increases political and public will to build an education system where students of color and multilingual learners, especially those experiencing poverty, will thrive.

The AHS team is looking at the data compiled in this report in order to create a Blueprint for Action to address the areas of need found within the report. The completed Blueprint for Action will be published on the School Website upon completed.
Parent Participation Needed for District Committees
This committee facilitates the articulation and coordination of the TK-12 curriculum. The committee provides a vehicle for defining and discussing curricular concerns related to the district program. The council advises the superintendent and the school board in making curriculum-related decisions. All instructional materials purchased with textbooks and/or lottery funds are processed through this committee.

Facilities Update - Measure R Projects
MPE Modernization Project Ribbon Cutting
On October 28th the MUSD held a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the finalization of the MPE Modernization Project. Staff, students, parents, admin , facilities staff and the construction vendors involved in the project were on site for the celebration. The ribbon was held and cut by MPE students who provided tours of both the new and renovated facilities throughout the school. Chartwells, our Food Service Management Company was also in attendance and provided Mango smoothie samples to those who stopped by to see the new kitchen facilities.

Measure R Projects Completed
A HUGE Thank You to the MUSD taxpayers!

The MPE Ribbon Cutting Ceremony marks the completion of the final Measure R project. In 2016 the voters of the MUSD Community approved Measure R, providing the MUSD $120,000,000 to rebuild or renovate our 4 elementary sites. Three of the four sites, which were built in the late 50's early 60s, were rebuilt as the infrastructure of each was failing. The 4th elementary, MPE, was a modernization and expansion project, modernizing all existing buildings and adding four additional classrooms, a new commercial kitchen (they only had a warming kitchen), a new kindergarten playground, and additional parking lot to the original site built in the mid 90s. With the first three elementary rebuild projects coming in under budget, it allowed the district to add additional updates to the MPE project that otherwise would have needed to be done in the next 10 years.

The MUSD Facilities Plan, created in 2014 , and the subsequent update in 2020, together with the 25 year maintenance plan provides the district with a roadmap for facility needs and improvements. With our 4 elementary sites, the District Office, VMHS all updated or rebuilt in the past ten years, the MUSD will now have to focus on bringing our remaining sites up to date (MJHS, AHS and MAE) in terms of electrical, plumbing, HVAC, classrooms, and campus safety features.

Our Facilities Committee will be reviewing and updating the District's master plan with project completions and revisiting the needs of our 3 remaining campuses in the near future.
